Significance of Doctors and Doctor’s Day?

 Doctor’s Day

In India, on Doctor’s Day is observed on 1st July to mark  the importance of doctors in our lives, especially in the COVID-19 Pandemic. The date may vary from nation to nation on the event of commemoration used to mark the day. In this article, you are going to get more about doctors and their achievements. This article is going to tell you the importance and sacrifices they made in this pandemic time.

India celebrates National Doctors’ Day on 1st July every year to honour the birth and death anniversary of great physician and second chief minister of West Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. This day is marked to show gratitude to all those doctors who have selflessly aided us in our time of need and tirelessly worked for the health of their patients.

India’s Unforgettable Doctor

Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who was not only a physician himself, but a philanthropist, educationist and social worker, who also served as Chief Minister of West Bengal for 14 years.

After his post graduation in 1911, he went on to become a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS).

Widely credited with making quality health services available to common people, he played an instrumental role in the creation of two prestigious medical institutions in the country — the Indian Medical Association in 1928 and the Medical Council of India, of which he was the first president, between 1939 and 1945. He also helped kickstart the Indian Institute of Mental Health, the Infectious Disease Hospital and Kolkata’s first-ever postgraduate medical college.

He made contributions to the organisation of medical education. He played an important role in the establishment of the Victoria Institution (college), Jadavpur T.B. Hospital, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, and Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital.

A year before his death, Roy was honoured with the Bharat Ratna. After his passing, his house was gifted to the public for running a nursing home.  In 1976, the B.C. Roy National Award was instituted in his memory for work in the areas of medicine, politics, science, philosophy, literature and arts.

Selfless Contribution and Dedication

While the whole country is fighting against the COVID-19 crisis, the ones on the frontline, doctors and healthcare workers, are working excruciatingly hard for the welfare of the patients and to minimise the damage to the society due to the pandemic. The lack of a definite cure for the infection makes their work extra tough and there is also the added pressure of calming the nerves of the patients and their families. For this, the doctors not only have to attend to patients in person but also have to stay connected to them over the phone and through video conferencing.

The threat of them catching the disease and infecting their own families also looms large over them, due to which most of the doctors have given up going homes and have shifted to solitary accommodations, where they go to take rest after completing their duty hours, which could stretch to 15 or even 18 hours in a day.

It is important to note that numerous doctors and healthcare workers have been infected with the virus while treating the patients

Needless to say, doctors, nurses and people working in health-care sectors are particularly vulnerable to the highly infectious disease. In response to the global pandemic, the under-resourced doctors are facing unprecedented challenges. The list of the sleep-deprived heroes includes doctors, nurses, medical cleaners, pathologists, paramedics, ambulance drivers, and health-care administrators. In the fight against coronavirus, the brave medical army stands strong with thermometers, stethoscopes, and ventilators as their weapons. Not to forget, medical researchers are working day in and night out against all odds, hoping to find the antidote to the disease.

Since the coronavirus outbreak, health-care professionals have not only experienced the gratification of healing patients and saving their lives but have also lost many battles along the way. On top of that, many doctors have even sacrificed their own lives in the line of duty.

Every day, the selfless warriors are giving it their all in health-care settings while cutting themselves off from their families and loved ones. The sacrifice that they are making for the safety and welfare of humanity is priceless and deserves lifelong gratitude on our end. Most importantly, we must reassess the value health-care workers hold in our lives and the kind of treatment they get from us. Among the several lessons this coronavirus pandemic has been teaching us, the biggest one is to find ways to sufficiently invest in the better and more efficient medical fraternity and give medical professionals the respect, compensation and infrastructure that they truly deserve once this crisis is over. Moreover, the world needs to work towards advancement in medical research and technology. Nothing will be a greater tribute to the health-care workers than this.

That being said, we’d now like to highlight the heroic efforts of some courageous and inspiring doctors from across the globe who lost their lives while saving the lives of COVID-19 patients.

Thank You

All of us are deeply grateful to all of the healthcare workers who are working tirelessly to help keep our communities safe.

We’re staying home for you. Thank you for working for us!

Thanks to all the healthcare workers on the front line who are risking their health caring for patients who have confirmed or possible coronavirus infection, while continuing to care for patients who have other medical conditions.
