How do stars form gold and how gold came to Earth? Origin of gold in simple language.

In medieval times, alchemists tried to achieve the seemingly impossible. They wanted to turn lead into gleaming gold. History often portrays them as aged eccentrics. Yet their dream was closer to reality than they imagined. Today we can manufacture gold on Earth. Modern inventions achieved what medieval alchemists missed by a few centuries. To truly understand the origin of gold and how this precious metal reached Earth, we must look to the stars.

True understanding of the education and knowledge as the chief wealth of students helps us appreciate scientific wonders like the origin of gold.

Gold Is Not From Earth’s Crust

Gold is extraterrestrial. Instead of arising from the planet’s rocky crust, it was actually cooked up in space and is present on Earth because of cataclysmic stellar explosions called supernovae.

Supernova explosions forge heavy elements, including gold, and send them through space to form planets like Earth.

How Stars Create Heavy Elements

Stars are mostly hydrogen, the simplest and lightest element. Enormous gravity compresses this gas and triggers nuclear fusion in the core. This process releases energy from the hydrogen, making the star shine.

The Journey from Hydrogen to Iron

Over millions of years, fusion changes hydrogen into heavier elements such as helium, carbon, and oxygen. Each stage burns faster until iron and nickel form. However, at that point nuclear fusion no longer releases enough energy, and yet pressure from the core peters out. The outer layers collapse into the center, and bouncing back from this sudden injection of energy, the stars explodes forming a supernova.

In a collapsing star, extreme pressure forces protons and electrons to combine in the core. This creates neutrons. Neutrons have no repelling electric charge so they’re easily captured by the iron group elements. Neutron captures create heavier elements a normal star can’t make. This process forms silver, gold, lead, and even uranium. In extreme contrast to the million year transformation of hydrogen to helium, the creation of the heaviest elements in a supernova takes place in only seconds.

The Chandra X-ray Observatory explains cosmic gold creation through neutron star collisions.

What Happens to Gold After a Supernova Explosion

The supernova shockwave hurls elemental debris through the interstellar medium. This blast triggers swirling gas and dust that later condense into new stars and planets.

How Gold Reached Earth

Earth’s gold likely arrived this way and was later shaped into veins by geothermal activity. Billions of years later, we extract it through mining, a costly process made harder by gold’s rarity. In fact, all of the gold that we’ve mined in history could be piled into just three Olympic-sized swimming pools, although this represents a lot of mass because gold is about 20 times denser than water.

Can Humans Recreate the Origin of Gold?

Yes, particle accelerators can mimic the nuclear reactions that create gold in stars. But they build gold atom by atom. Making even one gram would take nearly the age of the universe and cost far more than gold’s value. So that’s not a very good solution. If we ever mine all the gold on Earth, there are other places we could explore.

The ocean holds an estimated 20 million tons of dissolved gold but at extremely miniscule concentrations making its recovery too costly at present. Perhaps one day, we’ll see gold rushes to tap the mineral wealth of the other planets of our solar system. And who knows? Maybe some future supernova will occur close enough to shower is with its treasure and hopefully not eradicate all life on Earth in the process.

  • I do believe that a foreclosed can have a major effect on the debtor’s life. Property foreclosures can have a 6 to a decade negative effects on a debtor’s credit report. Any borrower who’s applied for home financing or almost any loans for that matter, knows that the worse credit rating is usually, the more tough it is to get a decent mortgage. In addition, it could affect a new borrower’s power to find a reasonable place to let or hire, if that gets to be the alternative housing solution. Great blog post.
