Speech patterns different from written rules were seen as errors or low-status traits. Many speakers were forced to adopt the standardized form.
Descriptivism – How Real Speech Challenges Grammar Rules
More recently, linguists have understood that speech is separate from writing and follows its own patterns. Most of us learn to speak at such an early age that we don’t even remember it. We learn our spoken habits unconsciously, not through memorized rules. Speech also relies on tone and mood, making its structure more flexible to fit the listener’s needs. This means avoiding complex clauses, changing pronunciation for ease, or dropping sounds to speak faster.
The Modern View – Balancing Grammar and Communication
The linguistic approach that tries to understand and map such differences without dictating coreect ones is known as descriptivism. Instead of deciding how language should be used, it describes how people use it and notes their innovations.
